Well darn it I actually read those little news blurbs when I check email, okay?
So apparently restaurant servers have their nose bent out of joint about 15% tips.
What?
No.
Here's how it's always worked:
*15% is the standard. Says "thanks. you did your job."
*Less than that is a sign that you did something wrong. No contact with the table, got the order wrong, left people sitting there for 5 minutes without utensils while their food gets cold while there's only like 3 tables there....basic screw up stuff. It's like a polite way of telling the server they need improvement without getting them in trouble with the management.
*More than that is a sign that you went above and beyond just "hi my name is (name) and I'll be your server. Our specials are (blank)."+keeping drinks refilled+being accessible. It means hey, wow, you took the time to be friendly, smile, double check, maybe remembered us from the last visit, dealt with any problems immediately and in an upbeat manner (like not looking at you funny and then deny that stinky, see-through lettuce is, in fact, bad, when it's clearly nasty as all heck) and just went above and beyond the call of duty.
A tip isn't a right - it's earned.
