Change In "Family" Values?
Oct. 19th, 2010 01:25 amI watch some shows with my mom, and I got to tell ya, she's probably tired by now of me nit-picking the "hidden meaning" of commercials.
Some commercials are all homey and domestic.
Some a little more so - like all the bounty commercials where dad and/or the kids are messing around. And the mom, instead of teaching the kids to be responsible, just smiles and cleans up after father and child. Yikes. What's next, a ball-and-chain connecting her to the oven?
How about the DirecTV commercial where they steal movies? Oh yeah. Thievery is AWESOME. Same with that Tide commercial where the girl can't find her shirt. Sure, Tide helps you steal from and lie to your children. Well done.
And then the two most disturbing commercials...
One is for Windows; featuring a woman trying to take a family photo. So she photoshops one together. Okay, sure.
But the parting line of the commercial?? "Windows gives me the family nature never could".
Wow. Just....wow. Seriously?!?! Welcome to the future, where we prefer the fantasy to reality. God forbid that instead you take away the cell phone and toys. No, just create your own perfect family. I mean, how DARE I suggest that the "shame" you feel be because you are incapable of parenting, not that your family can't sit still - no wonder, they'd have no respect for you at that point.
And the other disturbing one... it's a commercial where it shows a bunch of unruly kids while the mom smiles sweetly at the destruction, saying how her kids are "so cute she could just eat them up"..."and sometimes she wishes she had".
What???? You want to eat your children? Then, to make it just a little more Hansel & Gretel, it's a commercial for frozen microwavable deep-fried foods. Yes! Let's fatten up your children so you can eat them! Again, god forbid you make them less unruly by teaching them. No, instead let's wish you didn't have children, and choose to make them fat and sedentary... easy to catch and devour.
What the heck is going through the heads of advertisers?! Don't they take an actual look at what the heck they're putting out there?? What about the review boards? Seriously????
Who lets this out there?! Competitors, maybe?
So to all of you commercial companies out there.... take a second look. Seriously. Think about how it's going to come across.
